Being a bride-to-be means you are running high on emotions. One moment, you are over the moon, full of excitement and the other, you could feel completely stressed out and anxious. Don’t worry, it’s normal. After all, weddings are a perfect mix of that fairytale ending served with a side of societal pressures and family drama (along with all that money talk!). It’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news is with some advanced planning and realistic tips, your mental health can become much more manageable.
Understand your triggers
There are certain things that can instantly drive you into the anxious mode – be aware of such things. It might be finding out your dream lehenga is out of your budget, wondering if your MUA gets your wedding look right or when you need to speak to those nosy, disapproving relatives. Figure out these triggers and plan out how you will handle them. So that when they come your way, you are able to deal with them like a pro.
Have a calm space
Don’t let the wedding planning take you over. Take some days off. Indulge in self-care, go for a short holiday or pamper yourself with a massage, spa session etc. Practice mindfulness and meditation daily. If you are a meditation virgin, there are some apps like Headspace, Buddhify and Omvana that can help you get started. Set a calm space in your house, where you will be coming to meditate whenever the stress and anxiety starts getting to your nerves. You can also decide to sleep all day – if that’s what calms you down!
Take a stand (when you should!)
There are some emotional boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. Speak up and take a stand when you have to. So if a relative is trying to snoop into a lot of your bridal decisions or if your wedding planner is trying to take it easy – just be assertive. Some decisions can mess up your entire journey and it’s not okay! And we have the perfect ‘Coz I’m The Bride’ shirt, mug and phone cover for when you just need a little push to instill that ideal unflinching bridal thunder you will need to turn on from time to time.
Get Cosy with your partner
It’s a no-brainer that hugging, cuddling and love-making (ahem-ahem!) can calm down your mind. Talking and communicating about your feelings can help as well. After all, this is the person with whom you will share all your struggles. You can always trust ‘him’ to offer you unconditional support, empathise with you and love you nonetheless.
Seek Medical Help
You have tried everything and still feel anxious and stressed. Then get professional help. It’s nothing to feel embarrassed about. A professional will offer you a no-judgement, safe space to explore things that are troubling you. In fact, if you are someone who already suffers from anxiety disorders, schedule professional therapy sessions as soon your wedding date gets fixed.
