Significance Of A Mangalsutra:

We’ve seen our mothers/ grandmothers and all the earlier generations tie a mangalsutra for a long time now. And lately, they have been sucked into the debate of patriarchy. However, we believe that it’s all about your own personality and preferences. Some women prefer to wear it because it feels good to revel in the beautiful tradition without being considered as a symbol of patriarchy or an object of ownership. Plus, there’s a significant meaning to wearing a mangalsutra.

The word mangalsutra is derived from the Sanskrit word “Mangal” which basically means prosperity, good luck, happiness, and success. “Sutra” means thread, so basically the mangalsutra means a prosperous thread. The word “Mangal” also denotes planet Mars, which according to astrology is the planet in charge of marriage. It also has the color red, which is one of the reasons why Indian brides wear red on their wedding day

The black beads in the mangalsutra are present to repel any evil eye. The design of the mangalsutra is also considered to be symbolic of the union of Parvati and Shiva. The black beads symbolize Shiv Ji while the gold symbolizes Goddess Parvati. These black beads are also thought to have the power of all the elements, which helps maintain a strong relationship between husband and wife.

Besides these significant aspects, the mangalsutra is also said to have healing properties. How you ask? Mangalsutra is made of gold and is recommended that it should touch the skin and be worn within your innermost garment. According to Ayurveda, gold has healing properties and can protect your heart health. Further, the metal has the ability to draw positive energies from the universe to help maintain a balanced and peaceful mind in the newly married couple.

Earlier, the mangalsutra was a thread smeared in turmeric paste that was tied around the neck of the bride with three knots. But nowadays it’s worn like a necklace. The groom ties the necklace during pheras with the priest chanting prayers. Once the mangalsutra is tied, it basically signifies that the bride & groom are now one and united for seven lifetimes.

Mangalsutra – A Fashion Quotient

Brides are picking mangalsutra designs that gel into their preferences, style, and usage. The Sabyasachi Mangalsutra is a testament to women leading towards minimal designs that can be easily re-worn on different occasions. The Priyanka Chopra X Bvlgari Mangalsutra further scores this trend. Needless to say, you can find any kind of design you want in the market. The 24k gold is highly sought-after, but so is 18 karats with intricate designs and embellishments. Diamonds are also taking a forefront in mangalsutra designs. Whatever the case, Indian women are finding a functional design that lets them embrace this beautiful tradition with open arms even in a fast-paced life.
