Ah! The six yards of pure elegance and saree. Indian women just can’t escape the charm saree exudes whatever the occasion might be. You wear it for the first time on your school farewell and post that, there’s no going back. The utterly dazzling saree keeps calling to you on almost all special events – be it your sibling’s wedding, BFF’s wedding, college events or sometimes, a date night with your special someone.

While women generally resort to lehengas on their wedding day, some can’t seem to ditch the allure of the saree. And this blog is for all those women. Lately, with the trend of intimate weddings, many brides have decided to wear saree on their big day. Earlier, during our grandma’s time, SAREE was the usual choice for wedding ceremonies, lehengas were rare. But the glamorous upswing of weddings, somehow took away this trend.

Though not for the brides we will be posting about today. They ditched lehengas altogether and chose to wear a saree for their special day. It was such a breath of fresh air to witness these brides looking all prim and proper in the 9 yards of absolute panache. One look at these brides and you might change your mind & clas yourself in a saree as well!

#1 Tanya Singh, founder of Kosataga.in, wore a yellow banarasi silk saree with a red blouse and dupatta for her wedding day. Kosataga is all about luxury banarasi weaves that Tanya operates from Varanasi. Being a saree fanatic, no wonder she opted for saree on her wedding day (and also on her mehndi, reception and pre-wedding, that’s right 4 functions).

Keeping her traditional roots intact, she paired her attire with gold jewelry, as our grandmas did too, instead of Kundan-polki. Needless to say, we are so in awe of her bridal charm, and will always be!

#2 Sonali’s story is for all the couples who have planned their wedding in 2020. She was supposed to get married in October, but then Covid-19 hit. So instead of waiting, the couple decided to tie the knot in an intimate ceremony with only their loved ones in their presence. For the ceremony, Sonali chose this mint green saree by Manish Malhotra and paired it up with diamond jewels. She has definitely nailed down the minimalist Indian bride look.

#3 Jatinder and Mitesh had a lovely destination at Fateh Garh Heritage Resort, Udaipur. The bride wore an exquisite hand-woven Sabyasachi benarasi saree for her big day, first seen on Anushka Sharma. She teamed the saree with a simple over-the-head dupatta and gold jewels. Her end-to-end choker set looks utterly royal and goes flawlessly with her saree. If you’re a bride who wants to get that OTT bridal look in a saree, make sure your jewelry is a little on the heavy side.

#5 Chaitali and Nitin’s lockdown home wedding was one of the first Covid-19 weddings we featured. And the idea sure went viral through the Internet. Like others, Chaitali was waiting for the lockdown to be lifted, hoping she could have her big fat Indian wedding. But they soon realized the pandemic can be awry and decided to get married in an impromptu home wedding. As her lehenga wasn’t ready at the time, Chaitali wore her mother’s saree from Meena Bazaar for the pheras. The smile and laughter on her face is an affirmation that sometimes all that matters is getting hitched to the man of your dreams, no matter when or where.

#7 Bride Priya Kurani had a high-class, intimate wedding ceremony in Miami Florida. She chose to step out in a sheer white Sabyasachi saree for her wedding day. #9 Megha & Tushar’s lockdown wedding was another inspiration for couples who had to cancel their wedding because of Covid-19. These two had a destination wedding planned out at ITC Mughal Agra in April. But as the pandemic unfolded, they had a home wedding ceremony with just 30 people in their presence. For the pheras, Megha wore her mother’s tissue saree and teamed it up with minimal jewelry, glitter eyes, and dewy base makeup.

#10 Mrinalini and Kunal met on Jeevansaathi.com. A little unconventional, but when two people are meant to be together, it doesn’t matter how or where they meet. The couple’s wedding ceremony took place on the terrace of the bride’s home with only the closest bunch of people. Mrinalini wore a sequined saree for her marriage with a sheer net dupatta over the head. Her jewelry was so appealing. Right from the statement choker to a unique hathphool, she looked dreamy as ever in her bridal avatar.

#11 Last but not the least on this list is Pratha. The bride was clear that she wanted to look exactly like her mother on her wedding day. She also wanted to wear the same saree her mom wore to her wedding. But it was too old to be revived. So she opted for a Sabya saree instead. Doesn’t she look absolutely fabulous on her big day?

We understand that sarees are still the staple for brides in many cultures, like Tamils, Malayalis Bengalis, and Assamese. This blog is meant for North Indian brides, whose culture mainly calls for lehengas on their big day. Although we do hope all the Indian brides are able to gain inspiration from this article.
