#BridalSkincare: Fix Dark Circles & Bags Under Your Eyes Naturally

Having dark circles and eye bags can be very frustrating to deal with. They are quite stubborn and you will only start noticing some slight changes when you consistently work towards correcting them.

There are a number of reasons why women suffer from dark circles, here are some of them:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep Deprivation
  • Allergies
  • Age
  • Eye Strain
  • Dehydration
  • Genetics

Here are home remedies and few tricks you can use to say goodbye to your dark circles:

#1 Almond oil or Coconut Oil

Almond oil contains oleic acid that is known to lighten the skin. Applying it under your eyes regularly before going to sleep will effectively lessen your dark circles. Roghan Badam Shirin is the best kind of almond oil to apply to the sensitive skin around eyes. Purchase here.

Coconut oil is rich in Vitamin E and other antioxidants that help heal damaged skin cells. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it also helps with swelling. (Try this cold-pressed one here.) Here are some other oils which you can use at times:

  • Olive Oil: It helps with eye bags and puffiness. Due to its moisturizing effects, olive oil also helps anyone who has dry skin underneath the eyes.
  • Argan Oil: Due to its antioxidant properties, it is great for anyone suffering from premature wrinkles around the eyes. It combats the aging signs and brightens the area around the eyes.

#2 Cold Tea Bags

Tea is full of antioxidants, tannins, and caffeine. It helps in reducing the appearance of dark circles and minimize puffiness around the eyes as well. Make some green tea or black tea and put the bags in the fridge for around 15-20 minutes. You will need two tea bags for both of the eyes. Now put them on your eyes for around 10 minutes and rinse off with plain water. Do this 3 to 4 times a week and you will definitely see a difference.

#3 Coffee

Coffee is a great natural ingredient that increases circulation around eyes, decreases pigmentation and plumps up areas around the eyes. You can find it as the main part of many popular eye creams as well.

To apply, you can add coffee to coconut oil or honey and put the mask gently under the eyes for about 15 minutes. Rinse it off and repeat 4 to 5 times a week. See this video on how gently she puts the mask under the eyes & what the exact consistency needs to be.

Or try these DIY coffee gel eye pads. Add gelatin powder or agar agar to hot coffee and mix thoroughly so there are no lumps. Pour the mixture on a butter paper cut in the shape of a half-moon. Place it under your eyes for 20 minutes. You can make several of them and store them in the fridge to have your very own homemade eye mask ready for everyday use.

She used a silicon baking sheet, but it’s quite expensive so you can use a normal parchment paper as well!

#4 Cold Spoon

If you suffer from undereye bags especially after waking up in the morning, try this simple hack to get rid of them. Freeze two spoons at night and in the morning, place the back of the spoon underneath your eyes as close to the inner corners as possible. Glide them towards outer corners. Gliding helps in draining the liquid collected under your eyes and minimize puffiness. This is a great trick for you to try the morning of your big day!

#5 Tomato/ Cucumber/ Potato Juice

Tomato has lycopene in it that helps in tightening and toning the skin. Potato juice is rich in Vitamin C that rejuvenates and whitens the skin. Cucumber is full of antioxidants that repair skin cells and has a cooling effect on strained eyes.

You can apply the juice of any of the three or mixed together for 10-15 minutes and rinse them off with cold water afterward. Adding lemon to cucumber or tomato juice also helps with lightening dark circles as lemon acts as a natural bleaching agent.

#6 Ice Cubes

You can make ice out of teas like chamomile, green tea, coffee or cucumber or tomato juice. The cold temperature helps in reducing swelling under eyes and the ingredients will do their job of combating pigmentation and aging signs around eyes.

Apart from home remedies, here are some other everyday habits that can help with dark circles:

#7 Eye cream

Use a good eye cream during the day. Dab some using your ring finger as it applies the least pressure on your sensitive eye area. Choose the cream according to the specific concern you are trying to tackle: retinoids for aging, vitamin c to brighten, hyaluronic acid to plump and coffee to help with eye bags and puffiness. #8 Sleep Well

It’s important that you sleep for at least 7 hours daily. Sleep deprivation can strain your eyes, thus increasing the appearance of dark circles. Build a good bedtime routine so you get good quality sleep. Meditate, read a good book and keep your phone away for at least 30 minutes before you go to bed. Wear something comfortable (‘Bridal Beauty Sleep‘ shirt is made just for that), dim the lights, and set the right temperature to get the most out of your sleeping time.

#9 Change your sleeping position

Sleeping in the same position can cause fluids to collect in the same part of the eye through gravity. If you are a side sleeper, you might notice a heavier bag on the side that you sleep on. Keep changing your position while sleeping, it will really help in draining out the fluid.

#10 Don’t rub your eyes

Rubbing your eyes may seem like a harmless thing to do but they can break the blood vessels in your eyes and cause dark circles. If your eyes are itching, just go and wash them with cold water or spritz some rose water to calm the itchiness down.

#11 Get yourself check for a medical condition

Sometimes, dark circles can be caused due to anemia and eye bags can be a result of the thyroid, kidney problems, or any other cardiovascular disease. It’s important that you get yourself checked and see your health care provider for further evaluation.

If you have allergies, such as allergic rhinitis, then get treatment started as congestion in your sinuses can cause congestion in small veins under your eyes as well. This can lead to swelling and darkening of skin underneath your eyes.

#12 Don’t strain your eyes

If you are someone whose job is to look at the computer screen 24×7, here are some tips you should follow.

  • Use proper lighting.
  • Take frequent breaks. Get up and relax your body for a minute or two after every 30 minutes.
  • Blink often. This moistens the surface of your eyes.
  • Adjust the brightness according to the brightness of your surroundings.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away and stare at it for 20 seconds.

#13 Hydrate

You should drink at least 2 liters of water every day. That’s just a minimum requirement though, you should drink around 3-4 liters of water daily. And to make sure that your goal is met, get one of your bridehood mugs, it holds 250 ml of water. 8 *Bridehood* Mugs X 8 times = Minimum bar is done! Dehydration wreaks havoc on the already thin skin under eyes, making it look dull and sunken. Moreover, eat fruits & vegetables that have a high water content like watermelon, orange, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, etc.

#14 Eat Well

Sometimes, puffiness can be due to too much salt or alcohol in your diet as they lead to water retention and swelling in the face. There are certain foods that you should incorporate in your diet if you are fed up of dark circles like

  • Those rich in Vitamin C like citrus fruits, guava and red and green peppers.
  • Those rich in Vitamin E like almonds, avocados, dark leafy greens, seeds and hazelnuts.
  • Those rich in Vitamin K like basil, green leafy vegetables, cauliflower and cereals.
  • Foods rich in iron like lentils, tofu, mushrooms, dry fruits, and fish.
  • Lycopene, majorly found in tomatoes, some other foods rich in lycopene include guavas, papaya, and watermelon.

If you are looking for quick results, here are some medical treatments to tackle dark circles:

  • Prescription cream: Your dermatologist might prescribe you a cream that has a skin-lightening agent like kojic acid or hydroquinone that can help with dark circles.
  • Chemical Peels: A light chemical peel with just the right ingredients can help in clearing dark circles in just a few sessions.
  • Laser Therapy: A laser targets the source of dark circles by vaporizing damaged cells using heat energy. This also resurfaces the skin and reduces wrinkles.
  • Fillers: Hyaluronic acid fillers injected directly into your under eyes can help with plumping the area, reduce aging signs, and decrease pigmentation in the area.
